Can someone explain to me, like I'm a 3rd grader, exactly what the Plugin VM series vm_series-x.x.x is and when/why I would update it?

It is a bundle of drivers so the VM can interact with the hypervisor It's like installing the appropriate .dll in windows so your network card works properly
